The ANU College of Science (CoS) comprises: the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Research School of Biology, the Research School of Chemistry, the Research School of Earth Science, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, the Mathematical Sciences Institute, the Research School of Physics and Engineering, and the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. We seek applicants for a Research Officer position in genomic bioinformatics to support projects on evolutionary genetics of Australian vertebrates. These ARC-supported projects include landscape genetics in small mammals using SNP data, genome evolution in rock wallabies, and molecular evolution and diversity in tropical reptiles. The appointee will work under the direction of Craig Moritz, and engage with others in his research group and other labs in RSB to:
Understand bioinformatics requirements for downstream analyses in evolutionary genomics;
Develop, document and provide training in the use of bioinformatics pipelines; and
Prepare and assess quality of datasets from SNP (ddRAD) screening, target sequence capture, or whole genome resequencing.
The successful applicant will have:
A higher degree, or equivalent experience, relevant to these tasks;
Substantial expertise in handling genome (re)sequencing data and/or genome assembly, including scripting pipelines in Python or PERL; and
Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and complete projects in a timely fashion
Good team work and communication skills.
Understanding of principles of molecular evolution or population genetics would be an advantage.
This position is continuing, contingent on external funding (CCF), the initial funding period is one (1) years with the possibility of extension pending funding availability.
