The Melanoma Translational Research Group at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) works alongside our clinical oncology, surgical, pathology and biostatistics teams to investigate the biology of melanoma development, risk stratification and response to systemic therapies. The group is highly successful with major resources in human clinical tissue samples, whole genome sequencing, transcriptome, methylome, multiplex immunohistochemistry (mIHC) and increasing single cell sequencing datasets. The major asset to the group is the expert clinical annotation of the multi-omic data with patient outcomes and response to systemic therapies.
MIA is seeking a postdoctoral bioinformatics researcher that will leverage from the vast resources available for the discovery and validation of diagnostic tools. The role will work alongside computational biologists, pathologists and clinicians to interrogate multi-omics datasets and resources of MIA to improve melanoma diagnosis. The outstanding candidate will make an important contribution towards the accurate diagnosis and treatment of melanoma through impactful translational research.
Responsibilities:
- Identify a research program that can be answered using the resources of the group with a focus on discovery and validation of diagnostic tools.
- Conduct analyses and experimentation to answer scientific hypotheses.
- Publish research in high impact journals and present at international conferences.
- Refine data analysis pipeline for reproducible experimentation for various projects in the laboratory.
- Contribute to the implementation of whole genome, exome, targeted panel and RNA-seq data generation in-house.
- Develop visualization tools for the integration of high dimensional data with clinical phenotypes.
- Mentor and supervise students to develop bioinformatics talent.
- Attend clinical and collaborative research meetings to co-develop clinical questions and the possible implications of research findings.
- Comply with the Institute’s policy for handling information.

Key Selection Criteria
To be successful in this role you will have:
A PhD. in a relevant discipline such as Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a closely related field.
- Experience processing and analysing multi-omics datasets, particularly whole-genome/whole-exome/targeted-panel DNA sequencing as well as RNA sequencing.
- Demonstrated skills in UNIX/Linux environments.
- Proven ability to execute jobs in high performance computing clusters environments eg via torque/slurm workload manager.
- Proven ability to analyse and visualise data with the R statistical software.
- Experienced in at least one programming language (eg python, perl).
- Proven ability to work across diverse groups of staff within multidisciplinary teams.

Non-essential
- Experience in melanoma research, cancer research and biomarker development.
- Experience with analysis from omics data generated from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded derived tissue samples.
- Experience with mIHC imaging analysis techniques.
- Experience with machine learning techniques.
