The position of CRC Bioinformatics Research Officer will play a key role in collating, managing, and studying metabolic phenotyping data derived in-house using dedicated databases and existing informatics pipelines as well as developing new data analysis strategies. This position provides the successful candidate with the opportunity to work with complex, multi-dimensional data, and contribute to the translation of research into food science practice. The position also requires the Bioinformatics Research Officers to work closely with other scientific researchers and industry partners to ensure the outcomes of the project are delivered on time.

This project will involve a number of partners including the WA Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), global analytical equipment manufacturer Bruker BioSpin GmbH and key SMEs and industry stakeholders. The CCSM will harnesses the deep metabolic phenotyping capabilities of the Australian National Phenome Centre (ANPC) to generate molecular profiles of food and food products using a range of state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques (eg. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) to unravel key attributes like molecular make-up, nutritional functionality as well as authenticity and provenance.

The position will drive new research activities that focuses on generating molecular phenotypes of premium food products unique to Western Australia. The overall aim is to connect nutritional quality and composition with health outcomes.

What you’ll bring to this role (see Position Description for a full list, including desirables)

• A Doctorate (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, statistics, chemistry or related field,
• Experience in the development and application of bioinformatics tools and biostatistical methodologies common to the field of metabolomics and metabolic phenotyping,
• Proficiency in programming language such as R, Python, MATLAB, JavaScript,
• Experience in analysis of large data sets
