Brief position description: Precision health analytics is a substantial emerging opportunity for the health system especially when including data from omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics). A joint initiative between The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre at the University of Sydney (SPDS), seeks to evaluate statistical machine learning and artificial intelligence methodologies for use in precision omics analysis. We are currently seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on this project. The primary aims of the position are to assess the readiness of these analytical methodologies for clinical application and identify concrete commercialisation options.
The Postdoctoral Research Associate reports to Dr Ellis Patrick and is responsible for implementing, developing, and evaluating various analytical bioinformatics techniques for precision omics analysis. This role sits at the intersection of three highly collaborative working environments at WIMR, CSIRO and SPDS which contain internationally recognised researchers in statistics, machine learning and bioinformatics. Further, this role will work collaboratively with researchers with varied disease focused research interests within WIMR from the Centre for Cancer Research, Centre for Transplant and Renal Research and Division of Infection and Immunity.
Major Responsibilities
Key areas of responsibility include:
* Work with clinicians and research scientists to curate datasets from WIMR for constructing a robust an evaluation framework.
* Implement, augment, or develop CSIRO’s and other analytical technologies for precision omics applications.
* Evaluate the translational potential of these technologies for clinical application.
Essential Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you will need to have the following education, experience, and technical knowledge:
* Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation skills.
* a PhD in statistics, computer science, data science, bioinformatics or relevant discipline.
* superior computer programming or software development skills.
* demonstrated ability to conduct research / scholarly activities under limited supervision and as part of a multidisciplinary research team.
