Employer: CIIID Hudson Institute for Medical Research
Brief position description: The opportunity exists to join the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases (CIIID) as a Computational Biology Research Assistant.
The opportunity exists to join the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases (CIIID) as a Computational Biology Research Assistant. This role will focus on implementing and maintaining best practice computational pipelines and data management systems for analysis of genomic and transcriptomic high throughput sequencing data, microarray datasets and bespoke datasets. The successful candidate will also assist in design and analysis of sequencing projects as a key component of the scientific program within the CiiiD.
Essential Skills
· An Honours, Masters or relevant work experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Computer Science
· Demonstrated skills in Python and R programming
· Expertise in Linux/Unix operating systems
· Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Strong attention to detail
Ideal Skills
· Demonstrated expertise in the analysis of next generation sequencing or microarray datasets
· Experience in the analysis and interpretation of large datasets and delivering complex projects to completion.
· Skills in the use of relational databases (e.g. MySQL)
· Experience in cloud computing environments
· Detailed knowledge of biologically relevant statistics and/or machine learning
· Demonstrated experience in software development, documentation and code management
· Experience in web design
· Knowledge of genetics/molecular biology/biology would be an advantage but not essential
Data will be generated from a broad range of biological and disease contexts. Data will usually concern the innate immune response as well as on the bacterial content of the microbiome, their changes and consequences in infection, inflammation and cancer. Some aspects of these projects will involve correlation with phenotype information from animal model systems and clinical data from human studies.
As is standard practice, the position will be initially for 1 year, then renewable, subject to performance. A generous remuneration package is available at a level subject to qualifications and experience.
The successful applicant would interact with other bioinformaticians in CiiiD, molecular biologists and with Monash e-Research to ensure the necessary compute capacity and tools were available in a standardised analysis environment and manage data storage and backup, establishment and curation of databases. The person would also be responsible for implementing, benchmarking/updating and automated running of standard QC and mapping pipelines for small and large RNA-seq, whole genome and metagenome analyses.
