Brief position description: The Garvan Institute of Medical Research (Garvan) is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes, with over 600 scientists, students and support staff. Its mission is to make significant contributions to medical research that will change the directions of science and medicine and have major impacts on human health. Garvan’s research encompasses immunology, bone biology, neuroscience, diabetes and metabolism, cancer, and genomics and epigenetics. These research activities are organised within four themes: Cancer, Inflammatory Diseases, Healthy Aging, and Genomics, and three Centres: The Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics, The Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics and The Centre for Population Genomics.

The Garvan‐Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics (GWCCG) within the Institute houses a cellular genomics facility with cutting edge services for researchers and industry partners. The GWCCG team develops new technologies to solve critical problems and run research programs that focus on both fundamental and translational cellular genomics. The Garvan‐Weizmann Centre is one of the few global sites where state‐of‐the‐art technologies are seamlessly integrated, including the latest platforms in flow cytometry, microfluidics, genomics, high‐performance computing, and bioinformatics.

The Opportunity

Reporting to Group Leader Dr. Sara Ballouz in GWCCG, we are seeking an enthusiastic and talented postdoctoral fellow to join our research team for a 2-year full-time contract with a high possibility to extend. Broadly, the research officer will investigate and develop tools to study the molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development of sex differences in autoimmune diseases.

Key Responsibilities

Developing approaches to assess transcriptomic data from autoimmune patients
Studying the differences in the presentation of autoimmunity in males and females
Ensuring original contributions in research that creatively address questions of science in their field of expertise
Gain or sustain a significant international scientific reputation by effectively presenting high impact material at the most significant national and international scientific meetings in their field
Completion of research projects in an efficient and timely manner, with outcomes published under joint authorship in peer-reviewed journals
Publish papers in leading scientific journals
Stay up-to-date on advances in computational and functional genomics
About You

In order to be successful in this position, you will demonstrate the following key skills and attributes. The incumbent should have a PhD in an appropriate area of medical research. A background in cellular genomics and computational biology is desirable, but not essential.

A PhD (or soon to be awarded) in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics or related fields
Able to conduct independent research with limited supervision
Track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity
Able to work in a team and collaborate across disciplines
Strong interpersonal skills
Possess an innovative approach to problem solving
Strong expertise in functional genomics
Expert in R, Python or equivalent
