Brief position description: The Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics is a national infrastructure facility and a leader in the application and development of genomics in Australia. It is the largest genomics facility at any Australian University and is comprehensively equipped with the latest next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, with single-cell genomics platforms and with high throughput microarray systems. The Centre’s purpose is to deliver high quality genomic data to its clients and position UNSW as a leader in the field of genomics.

The Production Bioinformatician is responsible for managing the production bioinformatics of the Centre and overseeing the development, quality and daily operation of genomic data pipelines. This includes managing existing pipelines, which use a combination of in-house hardware and cloud capability, whilst implementing new scalable, fully automated pipelines.

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the position works closely with the Centre’s team of professional staff and with UNSW IT and research technology services to make optimal use of computing infrastructure to build optimal pipelines and data storage solutions. The position will also interact with key stakeholders to improve the efficiency of the production informatics and data delivery.

About the role

$109K - $123K plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading
Fixed Term – 12 months
Full-time (35 hours per week)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

- Manage production bioinformatics within the Centre, including short and long read sequence data and genotyping data.
- Oversee the quality control processes of all genomic data generated by the Centre.
- Manage all genomic data generated in the Centre.
- Maintain information processing pipelines ensuring that they operate in a robust, accurate, cost effective and timely manner.
- Use of information processing pipelines to support all services in the Centre.
- Generate and update a strategic plan for the Centre’s production bioinformatics, including the assessing of new software and tools, for the Centre’s Director and Deputy Director
- Establish, implement, document and test production pipelines and methods for analysis.
- Carry out validation and verification of informatics pipelines to be used in NATA-accredited testing.
- Uphold a high level of quality in the Centre’s data management processes and for the continuous improvement, and documentation of these processes.
- Support the production bioinformatics requirements of service managers in the Centre.
- Working in partnership with internal and external stakeholders, including UNSW IT and Research Technology and NCRIS partners.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
To be successful in this role you will have:

A PhD or Masters degree and relevant experience in bioinformatics or information technology, with a deep understanding of genomics, epigenomics, or transcriptomics.
Proven work experience in the implementation and use of genomic pipeline tools and experience with high performance computing, including cloud-based, and cluster-based infrastructure.
Extensive practical experience in a Linux environment and in scripting languages, including python, R, and bash.
Demonstrated skills in presenting complex data via simple, intuitive web-based systems.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Proven ability to develop, manage and maintain internal and external relationships.
Strong project management skills and a capacity to work with a high degree of independence.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
