Brief position description: Software engineer / production bioinformatician required for world-leading Brisbane-based microbiome company.

Microba’s vision is to improve human health with precision microbiome science. We are an awarded early/mid-stage Brisbane-based microbiome company. Microba offers services to consumers, health care practitioners, clinicians, academic and corporate clients. We conduct our own internal research programs and have microbiome derived therapeutic assets in preclinical development. Microba operate a multi-purpose laboratory with high throughput DNA sequencing and bacterial culturing capacity, a fully cloud-based scalable bioinformatics platform, advanced AI/ML analytics, purpose-built system logistics and process automation. We are a diverse multidisciplinary team motived by challenging problems at the forefront of microbiome science, genomics, product development and drug discovery. Microba is principled in scientific rigour and follows good scientific, engineering and quality processes.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented software engineer / production bioinformatician. You will be responsible for development, operation and maintenance of our bioinformatics platform. This includes all stages of the agile software development lifecycle as well as operation of the platform to deliver data and results across a wide range of commercial and clinical products within defined turn-around times. This role can be tailored to your skills and experience. The role is 2/3 software engineering and 1/3 production bioinformatics. Skills and Qualifications
1. Highly motivated, excellent communicator and team player
2. High attention to detail and perseverance to solve problems
3. Intermediate to advanced software engineering skills in Python and/or Java
4. Intermediate to advanced unit-testing experience
5. Intermediate to advanced Linux skills (shell)
6. Basic to intermediate expertise with cloud (GCP/AWS)
7. Good understanding of Docker and containerized applications (i.e. Kubernetes)
8. Experience with API development using Java / Spring boot a bonus
9. Basic to advanced bioinformatics (genome informatics) experience
10. Understanding of core molecular biology concepts within microbial genomics and microbial ecology a bonus

Key activities/duties
1. Scope and design data processing and automation software
2. Develop new software, ensuring extensive unit-test coverage
3. Follow coding conventions and version-control practices
4. Implement new features/bug fixes to existing software
5. Participate in code reviews for other team members
6. Operate the bioinformatics platform within a small team to process metagenomics and other genomic data into results for reporting and product services and delivery (bioinformatics production / services)
7. Productionise scientific / bioinformatics software into workflows
8. Participate in stand-ups, scoping, planning and refining sessions
9. Identify and implement improvements, both software and bioinformatic related
