Position title: Research Officer (Statistical Bioinformatics)

Brief position description: An exciting opportunity exists for a postdoctoral scientist (Research Officer) to join the research laboratory of Doctor Yunshun Chen in the ACRF Cancer Biology and Stem Cells Division (also joint with the Bioinformatics Division) at WEHI.
The laboratory works closely with research collaborators on various cancer diseases, with a particular interest in identification of cancer stem cells and understanding cancer genesis. The laboratory will focus on the application of single-cell and spatial technologies on cancer research and will develop advanced computational and statistical bioinformatics strategies to analyze and interpret genomic data generated by cutting-edge technologies. The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Yunshun Chen and will work on cancer genomics and statistical bioinformatics methodology development. Specific projects may involve single-cell multi-omics, spatial transcriptomics, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, breast cancer, liver cancer and lung cancer. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct bioinformatics analyses, to develop bioinformatics methodology as appropriate and to work closely with collaborators in a multi-disciplinary team.
Selection Criteria:
Knowledge and Skills:
• A doctoral qualification or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, computational biology or computer science
• Proficiency in R (prior experience in performing bioinformatics analyses in R would be an advantage as would experience in R package development)
• Experience in performing analyses using various software tools in Unix environment or on high-performance computing platforms
• Ability to apply statistical and computation principles to genomic problems
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and comprehensive documentation and record-keeping
• Highly motivated with the ability to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachable
Key responsibilities:
• Work under the supervision of the lab head to develop and implement novel methods for analyzing data generated from new technologies
• Work collaboratively with research scientists at the institute, providing bioinformatics supports to analyze and interpret experimental data
• Design statistical strategies to answer specific research questions in collaborative projects
• Produce publishable material of high standard and contribute to writing scientific publications
• Organize and keep a record of project documents, analysis reports, original and processed data
• Present research findings at meetings or conferences
