Brief position description: The successful candidate will provide bioinformatics support for the study of the development and function of blood cells. This role will include genomics data analysis such as RNA-Seq, Single Cell Sequencing and ChIP-Seq, and as well as imaging analysis, as part of a range of projects within the lab.
You will support the genomics and imaging data analysis of the laboratory. Playing a key role alongside the senior scientists, you will carry out a range of supervised work activities across a variety of projects using computational software and approaches to enable haematopoietic research. This role will include genomics data analysis such as RNA-Seq, Single Cell Sequencing and ChIP-Seq, as well as imaging analysis.
Honours / Masters Degree in a computational discipline relevant to bioinformatics and cellular genomics (bioinformatics, statistics, machine learning, computer science, applied mathematics, physics or similar) and proficiency in one or more of R, Python, C++, Java, Perl and/or SQL computer programming and scripting languages is essential. You will have a demonstrated ability in the use of Unix-based systems, and experience in data analysis and management.
Ideally you will have experience working in a high-performance computing environment where you have developed expertise in statistics and/or machine learning. Prior exposure to research in genomics, genetics, imaging, computational biology or bioinformatics will enhance your success in the role. Exposure to the statistical analysis of large-scale human and/or mouse genomic datasets will be highly regarded.

The Mackay Lab aims to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the generation of protective T cell immunity, with a view to develop new therapeutic strategies designed to harness immune cells to protect against infection and cancer.
The position requires a driven computational scientist with an interest in biological discovery. The researcher will lead projects that will involve the analyses of high-throughput sequencing datasets (e.g. RNA-seq and scRNA-seq) generated from pre-clinical models in the Mackay Lab and from patient cohorts. We are interested in the use of computational approaches to drive biological discovery and develop methods and software for the analysis of data produced by modern sequencing technologies. This position will be jointly mentored by Prof Terry Speed and Dr Heejung Shim. Prof Speed is a world-renowned statistician and a pioneer in the field of bioinformatics, with a Laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall of Medical Research (https://www.wehi.edu.au/people/terry-speed). Dr Shim is part of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Integrative Genomics. About the opportunity
We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for a Research Fellow – Biostatistician/ Epidemiology to join the Faculty of Medical Science Discipline of Pharmacology team.
This position will contribute to research conducted as part of a program, which aims to address research gaps in key human toxicology issues and ensure rapid translation of these results into practice and regulation. The incumbent will be working with internationally renowned experts, within one of the few substantive clinical toxicology research collaborations in the world. We work with several national and international networks of collaborators on various projects. The position will provide advice and support to researchers, collaborators and research students concerning the design and appropriate epidemiological and statistical methodologies, with a focus on pharmaco-epidemiology of linked data sets, pharmacometric modelling, epidemiology and/or clinical trials. Responsibilities will include planning and carrying out statistical analyses, using statistical software to manage and analyse data and contributing to drafting and dissemination of research results, supervising students and junior research staff. The incumbent will also have an opportunity to develop their own research interests in this field.
