Position title: Bioinformatician

Employer: NSW Department of Primary Industries - Biosecurity and Food Safety

Brief position description: Looking for a bioinformatician or computational biologist with a background in microbial bioinformatics to provide support to biosecurity projects and maintain a strategic focus on assessing genetic technologies for their use in diagnostics.

Additionally, you will undertake sequence analyses to aid response to suspected biosecurity incursions using high-throughput technologies, and develop and support research projects within NSW DPI Biosecurity and Food Safety. This will focus on advancing and improving diagnostic analyses through genomic technologies, but also through the automation of data processes with software pipelines.

Broken down into three areas you will undertake:

Bioinformatics

- Plant and animal pathogen identification for disease diagnosis and research
- Comparative genome analysis and metagenomics
- Biomarker, virulence and chemical resistance detection methods development
- Gene variant discovery and detection
- Collaboration with researchers and provide bioinformatic support
- Maintenance of best practice processes and techniques in bioinformatics knowledge

Data processing

- Automation of data processing and report generation with robust software pipelines and workflows
- Generation of NATA-approved quality control processes and documentation

Research

- Development and collaboration on project applications to attract external research funding
- Writing and publication of scientific manuscripts in internationally recognised journals
- Presentation of research at academic, technical and industry conferences
