Brief position description: Precision health analytics is a substantial emerging opportunity for the health system especially when including data from omics technologies (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics). A joint initiative between The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR), the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre at the University of Sydney (SPDS), seeks to evaluate statistical machine learning and artificial intelligence methodologies for use in precision omics analysis. The primary aims of the position are to assess the readiness of these analytical methodologies for clinical application and identify concrete commercialisation options.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate reports to Dr Ellis Patrick and is responsible for implementing, developing, and evaluating various analytical bioinformatics techniques for precision omics analysis. This role sits at the intersection of three highly collaborative working environments at WIMR, CSIRO and SPDS which contain internationally recognised researchers in statistics, machine learning and bioinformatics. Further, this role will work collaboratively with researchers with varied disease focused research interests within WIMR from the Centre for Cancer Research, Centre for Transplant and Renal Research and Division of Infection and Immunity. 

Major Responsibilities 

Key areas of responsibility include:

* Work with clinicians and research scientists to curate datasets from WIMR for constructing a robust an evaluation framework.
* Implement, augment, or develop CSIRO’s and other analytical technologies for precision omics applications.

About the position
The position of Laboratory Head in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is for an outstanding researcher to develop an internationally competitive team to create and apply artificial intelligence, machine learning, or statistical learning methods together with other computational approaches to omics, imaging, clinical, drug discovery or other data in order to address fundamental biomedical or translational challenges.

The position will be based in the Bioinformatics Division of the Computational Biology Theme at WEHI, which has an outstanding record of high-impact research in statistical bioinformatics, cancer omics and systems biology including the creation of bioinformatics methodology. We are looking for a new laboratory head who will build on and complement existing strengths. The new laboratory is part of a broader program developing AI and machine learning at WEHI, which includes postdoctoral fellowships, flagship projects in multiomics, image-omics and drug discovery, and external partnerships.

There will be excellent opportunities for collaboration within the Institute to leverage the broad expertise in cell biology, immunology, infectious diseases, cancer, computational biology, structural biology, and drug discovery, as well as genomics, proteomics and imaging technologies. The collaborative nature of researchers at WEHI and their expertise over a range of diseases make this an ideal place for such studies.

Selection Criteria
The successful candidate will hold a PhD or equivalent qualification and will have completed post-doctoral work with a strong basis in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or computational science, applied to biology, resulting in an outstanding record of scientific achievements. Their research focus will be aligned with the Division and the Institute. A history of a highly innovative and collaborative approach to research would be highly valued. Terms of appointment
This position is available for 7 years Maximum Term in a full-time capacity, renewable thereafter based on participating in the annual faculty review process, with underwriting for research and salary support during this period. Salary and appointment level is dependent on experience.

THE OPPORTUNITY 
The Research Assistant is accountable for assisting with bioinformatic analysis of experiments conducted within the Swarbrick Laboratory, with strategic guidance and training from postdoctoral bioinformaticians in the Swarbrick Laboratory. 

Major projects include generation of an international, large-scale, multi-omic breast cancer atlas and understanding the cellular mediators of response to cancer immunotherapy in breast cancer and melanoma. The Laboratory is generating substantial single-cell sequencing (scRNA-Seq), spatial transcriptomics and other genomic and proteomic datasets from clinical samples and preclinical models. 

This role will suit a computational science/bioinformatics graduate with training and experience in advanced computational techniques and with an interest in cancer biology, spatial biology or cellular genomics.

** Background ** 
In 2022 the Australian Government committed to increase equity of access and consistency and expand the number of conditions screened through existing newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) programs. In Australia, these programs are managed and delivered along jurisdictional lines by State Health Departments under a federated health model.

Equally in 2022, the Genomics Health Futures Mission (GHFM) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) awarded more than AUD$15 million to support 5 research programs, which are exploring the application of first-tier and second-tier genomic NBS as well as health economic, ethics and equity considerations. 

The Newborn GEN SEQ TRAIL (aka the TRAIL study) is one of these 5 studies, looking to implement genomic NBS in NSW, led by Clinical Professor Bruce Bennetts.

** The Role ** 
The successful candidate will play a significant role in delivering new and existing projects in collaboration with NSWHP ICT and local clinical laboratory services. About the Position

This position will be based in the Papenfuss Laboratory within the Computational Biology Theme. CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Anti-viral Immuno-engineering Bioinformatics

Position title: CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Anti-viral Immuno-engineering Bioinformatics

Brief position description: CERC Fellows are appointed for three years or full time equivalent. 
The CERC Fellow will play a critical role in an overarching project which involves a multi-disciplinary, multi-CERC Fellow team to develop and validate a novel solution to address viral outbreaks in livestock and aquaculture species, leveraging new developments in the field of gene editing. The overarching project brings together a multi-disciplinary team to address this challenge which cost the agricultural industry millions of dollars every year. Harnessing the collective expertise across the fields of immunology, genome engineering and bioinformatics, the multi-CERC Fellow team will draw on the SynBio principle of “Design-Build-Test-Learn” to adapt and optimize a key antiviral mechanism from bacteria. The adapted antiviral platform can then be transplanted into agricultural species to enhance resilience to viral pathogens.
The CERC Fellow will develop models of viral evolution and use this to inform the design of CRISPR/Cas13 based antivirals for applications in livestock and aquaculture industries. Specifically, they will use machine learning to approaches to understand how viruses evolve in response to selection pressure to better understanding escape pathways and use this to design CRISPR/Cas13 anti-viral that are robust to escape mutations. The Fellow will work closely with multidisciplinary experts in aquaculture, livestock, virology and genome engineering to achieve project outcomes. The project also aligns to the Immune Resilience Future Science Platform (FSP) which aims to harness the fundamental understanding of the immune system to develop novel strategies and platforms that will build resilience in animals to combat disease and parasite challenges.
This role is part of a “Team Sport” CERC Fellowship where three CERC Fellows work with multiple teams collaborating on an overarching, multi-disciplinary research project. Each CERC Fellow will lead an individual sub-project, contributing their expertise, and work closely with the other team members with the aim of delivering significant scientific and translational impact on a broad research topic.
