Building on our recent discoveries, we are now seeking an innovative and enthusiastic early career researcher to develop bioinformatic software to support a variety of large genomics projects centered on the role of genetic variation in human disease and host/parasite interactions. In addition to research, you will also undertake learning, teaching and engagement activities, contributing to the development and expansion of JCU’s undergraduate/postgraduate teaching efforts in Bioinformatics. With a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, software engineering, biostatistics or related disciplines, you bring extensive experience in the development of computational workflows and software tools; pipeline/algorithm development and implementation in R, Python, Perl, shell scripts; next generation sequencing data analysis (RNA-Seq, WGS, long-reads, single cell) and analysis of genetic variation. You demonstrate enthusiasm and capacity for conducting internationally recognised research evidenced by a track record of publications.

Brief position description: An excellent opportunity exists for a talented postdoctoral Biostatistician/Statistical Bioinformatician (Research Officer/Senior Research Officer) to join the Colonial Foundation Healthy Ageing Centre (CFHAC) in a joint appointment with WEHI's Bioinformatics Division. The WEHI and the Royal Melbourne Hospital have come together to create the CFHAC to lead the complex change necessary to deliver the next generation diagnostics for ageing related disease within Victoria’s healthcare system. The Centre headed by Associate Professor Andrew Webb brings together clinicians, pathologists and researchers from hospitals and research centres to apply the latest knowledge and technologies to transform the clinical discovery process and rapidly translate discoveries into clinical utility. The position will be part of the CFHAC and will be jointly supervised by Dr Belinda Phipson. The Phipson Lab primarily develops statistical methods for analysing data from high throughput sequencing technologies. WEHI’s Bioinformatics Division has an excellent international reputation and the Phipson Lab has significant expertise in developing bioinformatics methods and software for analysing transcriptomic and epigenetic data. The appointee will work closely with the Bioinformatics and CFHAC team to develop novel statistical bioinformatic methods for processing, interpreting and analysing large-scale proteomic data with linked clinical information related to ageing and disease. The appointee will particularly develop analysis workflows appropriate for the latest time-of-flight mass spec technology and apply these methods in collaborations with the clinical partners of the CFHAC for implementation into clinical diagnostics. Brief position description: An excellent opportunity is available for a Research Officer (Statistical Bioinformatics) to join the Bioinformatics Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. The Phipson lab works on novel bioinformatics methods development coupled with collaborative analysis projects with scientists within and external to WEHI. The role of the Research Officer is to work on statistical bioinformatics methods development and analysis from data generated from cutting-edge technologies with a focus on single cell assays. Specific projects will involve single cell transcriptomics, spatial transcriptomics and single cell multi-omics. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct bioinformatics analyses, to develop bioinformatics methodology as appropriate and to work closely with collaborators in a multi-disciplinary team. Selection Criteria: The successful candidate will have a doctoral qualification or equivalent in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, computational biology or computer science. The candidate should have the ability to apply mathematical, statistical and computational principles to genomic problems. Experience with data analysis, programming and large datasets would be an advantage as would experience in R, Python, Unix and software development. Prior experience in bioinformatics and medical research would be an advantage but is not required. The candidate will be expected to have excellent organizational and time management skills, and a high level of interpersonal skills. Brief position description: We are seeking a post-doctoral research fellow with expertise in bacterial genomic analyses to contribute to ongoing projects exploring the diversity and epidemiology of Klebsiella surface antigens. The appointee will use computational biology approaches to investigate the sero-epidemiology of Klebsiella polysaccharide capsules and lipopolysaccharides. Klebsiella species are among the World Health Organization priority pathogens for which novel control strategies are urgently needed, and the Klebsiella capsule and lipopolysaccharides are key targets for novel vaccines. Our team has developed genomic approaches to explore the diversity and epidemiology of these important antigens. In collaboration with researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK), the Statens Serum Institut (Denmark) and other global partners, we are continuing to improve these analytical approaches and apply them to large genomic datasets in order to directly inform vaccine design. The appointee will contribute to these and related efforts exploring the genomic epidemiology of Klebsiella species.
